Description

Always thought this character, in the right hands, would make for fantastic stories. Visually he looked cool and hey he is a Defender so I wanted to make him mine. Here is the C.L. write up: This is the cover to 1976's Son of Satan #5 by the team of Ron Wilson and Joe Sinnott. It features Daimon Hellstrom, AKA the Son of Satan, in battle with the villain Mind-Star.

The free-wheeling 1970s is probably the only time in Marvel's history that they could get away with a title called Son of Satan. During the early 70s, when Marvel was having success with titles like Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf By Night, Stan Lee came up with the idea of a hero/anti-hero based on Satan himself to be called "Mark of Satan". Roy Thomas suggested softening the idea a bit and making the character the Son of Satan rather than the actual Devil, as that might be less offensive to some. The character was given the mysterious sounding name of Daimon Hellstrom and he first appeared in Ghost Rider #1 in 1973, then was spun off into his own feature, "Son of Satan", in Marvel Spotlight #12-24. Despite some objections from religious types, sales were strong, prompting Marvel to launch the character into his own series, Son of Satan. The series ran for an additional eight issues, ending in 1977 when the market for horror-based heroes had softened. Hellstrom then became a recurring character in Defenders, where he eventually was married for a short time to Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat.

Ron Wilson got his start at Marvel in the 1970s and he has worked on virtually all of Marvel's major heroes in the decades since. He's best known for his long run on The Thing that ran from 1975 to 1986, starting in Marvel Two-in-One and then transitioning to the character's solo title.

Joe Sinnott is Marvel's Silver Age and Bronze Age inker supreme. He's best known for his historic collaboration with Jack Kirby on Fantastic Four, which began the peak period for that key title with issue #44. Sinnott stayed on "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine through the end of Kirby's run and then almost another decade beyond that to maintain visual continuity for the flagship title. As seen by the example of this piece, Sinnott made time to work on many other Marvel projects during his tenure as well.

The art has an approximate image area of 11" X 16".

For some reason I never got to comment on this cover.  Great character, supreme inker, great and - I would say - underrated penciler. Well done!
