DescriptionART BLAKEY - (1910-1990) 5" x 7" Original Oil on Canvas - Ken BarnesArt started his career playing piano but ended up on the drums after a nightclub owner’s suggestion. His style was influenced greatly by a trip to Africa where he learned polyrhythmic drumming that helped to form his readily identifiable driving rhythms and his incessant four beat on the high hat cymbals. Blakely played with legends during his long career such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie a, Billy Eckstine and Sarah Vaughn. He formed the Jazz Messengers and incubated the careers of scores of sidemen. Art died at age 71 but his message lives on in his music and many other drummers he mentored.
