Description..Talking about Scrooge McDuck`s ”old number one” – His First Dime..!Be my guest to take a look at this very unique drawing which was made by Carl Barks for the ”Society of The First Dime” back in 1968. It shows Scrooge McDuck in a typically doting pose in his Money Bin with his ”Old Number One” – the First Dime he ever owned. Observe Scrooge`s heart-shaped eyes. A nice and well considered detail. ”A bunch of fans at the University of Wisconsin got together, organized the society, and sent me an honorary membership in it,” Barks later recalled. ”The Society of The First Dime” had about ten members and lasted for several years. Barks accompanied the drawing with the following reciting love poem to the dime : Ah, spring! Sweet days of love! Sweet days when men should take the time a money hill to climb, and there renew their love affair with their first dime! Scrooge McDuck. Of existing fan drawings made by Carl Barks none of it compares with the “Society Portrait”, which in my own noble opinion is one of the best.. Sketched first and then finished in india ink on comic page stock paper. Size is about 8 1/2" by 11". The drawing is actually so detailed that it could easily work as a finished cover. In the letter that accompanied the drawing, Carl indicates that he was taking a big chance in drawing it for the Society, because in 1968, he was unsure of the support he might have from the Disney studios in such endeavors. Remember that Barks had retired drawing comics for Western about 2 years earlier the making of the “Society Portrait”. Many thanks to John Bullis from “The Society of The First Dime” for taken care of this unique drawing for nearly 50 years and for passing the baton to me for being the new custodian of this masterpiece. Congratulations! As you said, this is like comic book cover! ;-) The size is matching, also details, very nice Scrooge portrait.
