Time to bring in…Bloodshot!

The unrelenting forces of the Armor Hunters have wreaked havoc on planet Earth, leaving terror and destruction in their wake. Now, our last, best chance at standing against the calculating wrath of the Hunters comes in the form of Unity – Livewire, Ninjak, Eternal Warrior, and their latest recruit…BLOODSHOT?! But can they stop these galactic intruders before they capture X-O Manowar and destroy the Earth?

Unity #9 takes the Armor Hunters crossover into bleak territory. The team finds themselves separated geographically and fighting a possibly unwinnable fight. They’re also left to wonder about the Armor they’re defending.

The most effective part in the story is Livewire’s reflection on her humanity or possible lack thereof, coupled with a short talk with Bloodshot afterward. She now has to struggle both with Silk’s earlier claim that she is not human and the revelation that the armor, which she wore briefly, usually replaces its wearer. The two are uniquely positioned to question both their construction (Biological? Human? Alien? Hardwar?) and what it says about their possible loyalties and actions, and Kindt gives the time its due weight.

The rest of the issue is combat-oriented as Ninjak and the Eternal Warrior battle the Armor Hunter’s dogs in London. What this segment makes clear is that, unless something changes, Unity is outclassed. Ninjak and Gilad are fighting all-out in confronting the dogs, and these are a small part of what the armor hunters can call on. Kindt and Segovia showcase the fighters’ strength and ingenuity and give indications of how Gilad’s long past helps him in combat, but the scene is one of devastation.

Segovia is effective here in showing Livewire’s fear as she attempts to find out whether she is human and turns to Bloodshot for help. There are some panels of the non-super powered military struggling to confront the magnitude of the attack, plus one or two shots of the family lives that are at stake. Segovia is also strong with the battle scenes, showing action in many forms and giving some spreads that show London’s destruction and the power of the dogs in battle. The Hunters themselves make no appearance.
