Description

This T.E. Powers cartoon ran in 1911, and features Theodore Roosevelt punching the New York Post editor Oswald Garrison Villard into the "Ananias Club" of liars. According to Wikipedia, the Ananias Club was "...supposedly named for Ananias who fell dead when he lied to the apostle Peter about a financial transaction, was an expression employed by the press in 1906-1907 to avoid the "short and ugly word" (liar) in connection with the "mutual accusations of inveracity" which arose between President Theodore Roosevelt and Senator Benjamin Tillman of South Carolina over the railroad rate bill. The same expression was later used during the controversy between Roosevelt and the so-called "nature fakers"." In the cartoon, other editors are waiting their turn. Even in 1911, "fake news" was getting the best of Presidents. Powers worked for William Randolph Hearst for decades, and was one of his favorite cartoonist. He was one of Theodore Roosevelt's favorite cartoonists as well.
