Description

I thought I'd post this science fiction pulp illustration by Ed Emshwiller in honor of Leigh Brackett's 102nd birthday today. It's for Brackett's story, "Mars Minus Bisha," and ran in the January 1954 issue of Planet Stories.

Back in 2005, on the final day of that year's Windy City Pulp and Paperback Convention, a guy came in with a small art portfolio filled with about a dozen pieces of science fiction pulp art. Most of it was from Planet Stories. He stopped at my table first, but unfortunately I was out wandering around the room. He then stopped at the table next to mine, which was my friend Bob Weinberg's table. Bob was smart, he was at his table. So the guy sold all his art to Bob, then left the convention. A few weeks later, I did a deal with Bob in which I acquired this one.
