This was DC's second complete Who's Who project following the one that appeared in 1985-1986. This one was done in a loose-leaf, three-hole punched format so that the pages did not have to appear alphabetically. Thus, the first issue was able to feature Superman on the cover, which is the piece offered here. It's a classic Superman illustration, with the Man of Steel flying over Metropolis, with the Daily Planet globe in the background. For almost eight decades now, Superman has been the most well-known superhero in the world. He continuous presence in comic books as well as movies, TV, video games, merchandise and more has made the Man of Steel an icon for the ages. The revamp by John Byrne in 1986 modernized the character for a new era. After his apparent death in the 2016 hit film Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Superman will return in this November's Justice League movie. A popular TV version of Superman was recently introduced in the hit network series devoted to his cousin, Supergirl. In current comic books, Superman is seeing renewed popularity as the beloved post-Crisis version has returned to replace the younger New 52 version as part of DC's Rebirth initiative. This mature Superman is the version of the character that has been married Lois Lane since the 90s and they now have a young son, the new Superboy, which is making for some great new storytelling opportunities. Jerry Ordway first made his mark working with writer Roy Thomas on DC's "Earth-Two" books in the early 1980s--penciling All-Star Squadron and Infinity, Inc.. He then spent some time inking a couple of high profile projects in the 80s--Crisis on Infinite Earths and John Byrne's Fantastic Four. From 1986 to 1993, he was a key penciler on Superman working with John Byrne during Byrne's popular revamp and then staying on after Byrne left and contributing to the best-selling "Death of Superman" era. He then went on to revamp DC's Captain Marvel in the long-running Power of Shazam!, which he both wrote and drew. Social/Sharing |
