Description

This is a controversial piece that was first sold in a Sothebys comic art auction decades ago. According to Greg Theakston in his second volume of his biography on Jack ("The King") Kirby, he argues that Kirby never touched this piece, despite the certificate of authenticity that was signed after his death by, amongst others, his wife, Roz. Given the relevant timeframe, it is likely that, if Kirby in fact touched this piece at all, it must have been via a lightboxed copy. I do not want to enter into unnecessary controversy. What is clear is that Ayers inked the piece. Whether or not he (or some other person) ghosted the pencils as well will forever remain a mystery. Kirby's signature, however, appears on the piece. I don't know what happened precisely but would like to think that both Jack and Roz would not authenticate a piece that was wholly or completely bogus. Be that as it may, I was happy to obtain this piece and, assuming the worst, am content to have this in memory of the greatest comic artist of all time.

It's one thing for people to claim Kirby never touched the piece, but those claims always suffer from a lack of credibility when those who make such claims don't come out and publicly state who DID draw it. Either way, it's a very nice looking piece and as you've decided to own it with eyes wide open, I think there's really no way you can lose, and you have a lot of enjoyment to gain. Congrats!
