DescriptionSub-Mariner (1968) #40 page 6Gene Colan & Grainger drew this 1971 Sub-Mariner page featuring Prince Namor, Lady Tuvia, Turalla the Mad, and the one and only Spider-Man. Colan drew the Sub-Mariner feature on and off for several years starting with Namor's first Silver Age solo story in Tales to Astonish #70 (1965). While Colan drew hundreds of stories for Marvel over the course of 50 years, we can't think of many instances where he drew their number one character, Spider-Man, so this is a pretty rare opportunity to own a Colan Spidey original. Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner was the first of the Timely/Marvel superheroes, one of the big-three Marvel heroes throughout the Golden Age, along with Captain America and the original Human Torch. Sub-Mariner would also be the first of the Timely characters reintroduced into the Marvel Universe in the 1960s in Fantastic Four #4 (1962). After a successful run in Tales to Astonish, he was awarded his own self-titled series in 1968 which would run for over 70 issues. Namor has been a founding member of the All-Winners Squad, the Defenders and the Invaders as well as a member of the Avengers and the X-Men. He continues to play an active role in today's Marvel Universe and it is only a matter of time until he's introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Introduced in 1962, Spider-Man has been Marvel's most popular character for over 50 years. With the much anticipated integration of the hugely successful Spider-Man film franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe coming in July when Spider-Man: Homecoming opens, it seems likely that interest in standout Spider-Man original art will continue to grow for years to come. Gene Colan, who was one of Marvel's best artists in the late 60s and 70s, had started working at Marvel during the Atlas horror days of the early 50s. Like Romita, Buscema and others, he moved on during the Atlas implosion and then returned in the mid-60s when the Marvel era started picking up steam. His first assignment was to launch the first Silver Age Sub-Mariner solo series in Tales to Astonish and he did an outstanding job. If you look at his work from that period, or his work on Iron Man in Tales of Suspense, it's interesting how modern it looks compared to other artists' work from that time. Even Colan's work in the 50s was already very sophisticated looking. By the 70s, when he was drawing Daredevil, Howard the Duck and all 70 issues of Tomb of Dracula he was definitely at the peak of his artistry. Social/Sharing |
