I had the pleasure of meeting Mike at the 2018 MoCCA Fest at the Metropolitan West in NYC. Mike was doing signings at the CBLDF table at a couple of set times over the weekend, but he was also set up at a table (next to fellow amazing artist, Gregory Manchess). It was just an empty table, with a hand written placard with his name, a portfolio of pre-done sketches he brought along for sale and Mike himself!

I was at Greg's table when I noticed Mike setting up and immediately started inching my way over to get to the portfolio! It was great to be able to leisurely flip through the book and have my choice of so many awesome pieces.

I settled on this great Hellboy piece..it was the largest figure of the bunch and I decided this was the one! I only have a Frankenstein sketch from Mike, that I had purchased on Ebay, so I definitely was happy to be able to pick up a sketch of his signature creation!

A little later I got to have a second thrill of purchasing another piece, for my friend, Brad Hatfield, so that was cool to live vicariously through him on another purchase, lol.

I came back a bit later to ask Mike for a photo; while waiting, I listened to Mike explain to some fans how he leaves the white open spaces in his sketches (within the black areas) to give life to the line and keep the feeling of the drawing fresh and less static.

Hopefully he will make it back to another NY area show and I'll have another opportunity to pick up a drawing .
