Description

This 6" x 17" original concept drawing of Helm Toy's 1989 Michaelangelo inflatable bop bag was accomplished in mixed media, primarily marker, and applied on board with fist and logo cut-out stats. The final produced toy mirrored the Turtle's pose, changed the bandanna to orange, and moved the brickwork background over to the packaging.

Vinyl bop bags have been a toy store staple since the mid-1960s, giving children a safe way to burn off excess energy and, in the case of the Turtles, work on their ninjutsu training.

On his Cowabunga Cartoon Classics! blog, Mirage Studios licensing artist Ryan Brown wrote this about the piece: "Now this is the stuff we saw nearly every day. Concept art coming through the approval pipeline. Usually done with markers and mounted on Bristol board, this is the first glimpse of what the product would look like."

Ninja Turtles co-creator Peter Laird also commented, "This stuff is cool to see, but I have to say it also gives me a little bit of the heebie-jeebies, as I think back to those days when there was just an absolute FLOOD of this kind of stuff coming into Mirage for approval. As I recall, it was very nearly overwhelming. Yow!"
