DescriptionReceived this beauty in the mail today. This was set up and started at the Big Apple Con in NYC Saturday, April 14th, 2018. A good portion of it was finished that day, but I had to leave the show a couple of hours before it ended so Michael finished it up afterwards and mailed it off to me this week. What a gorgeous interpretation of Moebius' famous character, known for his appearances in Heavy Metal magazine (Metal Hurlant, originally!). When I asked for the character and showed Michael my reference, he immediately had an idea of how he could incorporate both Arzach and his trusty pterodactyl creature, quickly pencilling a tiny thumbnail of the layout on his portable wooden drawing board. I love how he inked the pterodactyl in a lighter style, which on one hand pays homage in a way to Moebius' inking style or at least has a more European flavor to it, while also allowing the heavier inks of Arzach to come forward so they're not competing with each other. The work of a true master! 11x14 on bristol. Social/Sharing |

With Golden's style evolving over recent years, sometimes when he draws familiar characters, they may not look like they used to. Simply because he's not drawing the way he used to. But in cases like this one where he's drawing a character that he isn't normally associated with, there's a newness and wonderful feeling of discovery to it. I really like this. A wonderful contemporary Golden example.

Thanks, Eric. That's a really nice way of putting it. It's funny, I wasn't initially thinkg of commissioning Michael at this show, but a few words from Renee and I was reeled in, lol...
I had a packet of reference pics and I think everything aside from two characters, Michael had already drawn for me! The Arzach and Rat Fink were the only ones he hadn't done, but he was keen on the Arzach, so that was it!

Michael has really taken things to the next level with this. Had I never seen his work before, seeing this piece would prompt me to claim he is a Modern Master!!!

So many fun Golden sketches in your gallery. Perchance is Michael held in chains deep down in your basement toiling to create all these beauties? Forget I asked.

Incredible commission, Justin! Flippin' -fantastic- choice of character, and I think Michael's inspiration shines through very clearly. Great use of thick and thin lines (just as you say) to create a piece with weight, depth, and style. Superb execution - congrats!
