Description2nd of 2 Black Panther (BP) posts tonight and this is a HUGE acquisition, CAFers…a most important piece for me in terms of artist, character, significance, and, of course, the art itself – a BP page by the King, Mr. Jack Kirby! I figured with so many characters featured in the newest Avengers film I’d post my first piece by one of the creators of the Marvel Universe as we know it…and what a piece it is, at least for me!Though my collector tastes (and wallet!) tend primarily to art created during my younger years and later I’ve thought it would be awesome to get published pieces of my 2 favorite characters, Spider-Man and BP, by the artists that first drew them. I’d love a Ditko ASM page but…let’s say…those pages demand a certain premium yours truly is not equipped to fork over at this time! But, to me, this page is just as good. BP edited, written, and pencilled by co-creator Kirby in BP’s second (technically first, but I count the Jungle Action run) solo title with inks by common collaborator of the time, Mike Royer! Let’s get to the art – so much going on in this page. Got that 4 equally sized panel layout that Jack often used - it really looks like 4 mini splashes to me when I take a step back! BP’s in every panel and drawn from different angles and in different scales. Check the captions out. BP mentioned in all 3 in that fantastical, comic book way – a staple for Kirby. Gotta love that dialogue, too, between him and Hatch-22. BP shrewdly gets close enough to lay a booming punch on the Six-Million Year Man as only Kirby can portray it! I really dug this page overall but that last panel really sealed it for me due to the caption, BP in action, and that “SMASH” sound effect displayed…it’s a panel that’s got it all. I picked this up from Bechara Maalouf of Nolstagic Investments. Saw it at the Comic Art Con in NJ this past September but was on the fence so didn’t pull the trigger there. But, I couldn’t stop thinking about it so got back with Bechara shortly after that...and let out a very loud “WHEW” when I knew he still had it! The BP film broke just a few records and that was pretty cool to see. Always been a fan of this character and it looks like some others are now, too, thanks in large part to contributions from a number of creators over the years…and it all started with Mr. Kirby and Mr. Lee. So, as an appreciator of the medium and its history, it’s a big understatement to say I’m happy with this page. Thanks, all, for looking and happy collecting! Social/Sharing |

Well, if yoiu're going to build a nice Black Panther collection as you've been doing, it NEEDED a page from the Kirby run to make it more "complete", and you got that in spades here. Congrats!

Definitely felt the NEED with the burgeoning BP collection, Ruben! Wasn’t sure it would happen but I’m stoked that it has! Thanks, and thanks, all, for the comments!

You might be on to something, Jimmy, but my bank account strongly disagrees ;) Definitely a growing interest but it’s a selective one...I think modern will continue to be my wheelhouse - kid of 80’s and early 90’s, y’know! Thanks for the add!

Congrats. 4 panels. Black Panther in all 4 of them and a „smash!“ to top it all off. It’s a keeper!

"Weird" is an apt description, Tommy...I thought "wacky"...but in a "great" way, as you say! This series started literally a few months after McGregor's awesome Jungle Action run ended and was clearly a 180 departure, to say the least. Definitely some different opinions out there on Jack's story but I say take it for what it's worth - weird, wacky, Kirby-style fun! And what's not up for much debate is how GOOD it looked! Thanks for the recent comments, man!

Awesome. I never got to meet Jack Kirby, but I did meet Mike Royer several years ago. Much like Jim Steranko, Mike Royeris a guy that likes to "hold court" with fans around his con table. lol
Congrats on acquiring this very impressive piece.

I haven’t met either myself but I hope to meet Mike at some point soon and bring this page along - would be cool if he remembered working on this, and based on your comment, could be really cool knowing his deameanor! And thanks for the congrats, Thomas - definitely a centerpiece of the collection. I planned to frame this one, and kinda still do, but that’s being held up because I pore over it all the time! Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Thanks, Ricky, and I totally agree about BP being one of the King’s best creations. I’ve had this page almost 2 years now and the love has not waned an iota. Really hits on all cylinders for me as far as a Kirby example goes!

What a score! Not only a great page, featuring The Black
Panther, but also rendered by his co-creator; Jack (KING) Kirby!
Hold onto this art, my friend. This one's hard to top.

It really must be an honor to own a Kirby, a page touched by the King and imprinted with his imagination. I can't even fathom how truly gratifying it must be to hold this in your hands. And to have one of your favorite characters serve as the main focus of the page must somehow add even more satisfaction to an already amazing feeling of owning a Kirby. I'll be coming back to this one of yours to look at and share in the satisfaction of a fellow collector.

Thanks, Ryan! And yeah, I come back to it myself pretty often, too ;) Still is one of my biggest OA gets and I'm stoked to this day that I was able to check off at least one King Kirby page in a personally BIG way with some BP action!
