Description
This is the second Gwenom cover commission. I felt that I had to improve on both the pose and the composition of the first cover, so I went back to basics. I wanted to convey the sense of a protagonist in turmoil. That hand reaching towards the camera can be seen as either a cry for help or a warning to keep their distance. That's why I gave her an expression of confusion. The composition of her being caught in the spotlight also had that trademark "cops-distrusting-spider-person" motif every Spider-Verse member is known for. I wanted to go further with an expression of her powers, so sitting on a web was a good idea. White-out gave me the effects that I needed to get that three-dimensional feel beyond the outstretched hand. I waited until the figure was fully rendered before applying the white because it would've been a pain to color around it. Given the client's disdain about the tongue on the front cover (see Cover A), I hid it inside the web nest. What was difficult was conveying the black suit under a bright light, and that meant making sure to evoke the blackness in shadows albeit with some minor shine. That was achieved with the duller unibal gel pen. The stucco wall with pieces of brick showing through was another experiment with texture; light orange lining along the bricks could showed more dust, but honestly hoping for more than what it produced. Either way, I like the final product and am satisfied the client did as well. The cool grays did the job and I used copic black for the suit so that it would be more blendable, and used actual ink for the shadows around the spotlight.
