DescriptionThe last page from this very fun mini-serie that I bought. I enjoyed it tremendously mostly because of the fantastic art provided by David Williams and Gary Martin.I have been following David’s art for years now and however incredibly talented he is as an artist and storyteller, his interior art remains too rare for my taste. The main incentive is obvious here. It’s the badass money shot. A very angry Hulk leaping at the Absorbing Man to deliver what is sure to be a fight-ending blow. This splash is also a testament of how thoughtful David’s storytelling is. Many modern artists would go the over-rendering route with such a splash. Adding layers and layers of details to make it count. David choose to play with the size and emotions of the characters instead to deliver. We know that the Absorbing Man is not a small character. But here he looks completely overwhelmed, both in situation and size by the oversized leaping Hulk. The reader gets a sense that he does not stand a chance basically. I also like how David drew him big, beefy and muscular but not ripped. Which is exactly how I see the character. He exercises (in prison) and is built but would not care about what he eats or how he stands so he is kind of thick around the edges. Hulk’s face is exceptional here. He is radiating anger and you can see from his face that he knows that the landing punch will conclude the fight. Again it would be easy (sier?) to draw his eyes blank to play on the raging aspect of the character but David drew his pupils and manages to (better) convey the same emotion by showing everything. No shortcut here. The little inserted panel also plays well in terms of storytelling as we get to see both characters up front on the same page. Kind of like the two sides of a playing card, of the same action scene. Let’s not forget to comment on the superb deep black inks by Martin. I love the shadows on the Hulk leaping for one. Great splash by a fantastic artist and storyteller. My only regret is that this serie has only been released in pocket manga size whereas it deserves a higher quality collection if only for its art. I should probably track it in floppies if only to appreciate it in the bigger original format. Social/Sharing |

Amazing splash page! Love the rage! I agree and appreciate David's design of Absorbing Man's physique, as more "realistic".
