DescriptionI can't quite put my finger on it but I connected with this piece when I saw it in a NYC art gallery while gallery hopping in Chelsea last fall. I was in NYC to see the Serpieri exhibition at Scott Eder's gallery and had the next day free so I spent it looking at art. I often connect with art immediately but it usually happens at the kind of galleries that you can't buy the art at(at least I don't think you can) like MOMA, the Art Institute, Tate, etc... In this case it happened in a retail gallery with a piece I could actually afford. When I saw this piece at the Chase Gallery, I had that kind of connection. It reminded me of religious paintings from a millennia ago yet with a very contemporary theme. It is a fun and challenging piece and it turns out has quite a different meaning that I had thought of on first glance. The piece had literally been unpacked 2 hours before I walked in. It was a new artist for the gallery and so they were just getting pieces in for an upcoming show. When I got back from NYC I started up a dialogue with the gallery owner and we worked something out. The piece is from 2013 and the artist kept it in his personal collection only deciding to put it up at this show as introduction to his work. I bought the art and left it with the gallery so they could have it as part of their exhibition. It was framed when I first saw it and I think the framing enhanced the effects of this painting. I did hear from the artist about what the painting was about and the content of it. The theme is about South America and the behind the scenes influence of Cuba on the events there. Williams is a Cuban artist who fled and has lived in the US and now lives in San Juan. The top part of the painting you can see Central America coming down. The head inside the urinal is that of Marcel Duchamps who is famous for placing a urinal in a museum as art. On the Crucifix is Cuba with a hand coming down controlling other figures. There is a lot to take in on this painting and it changes with each viewing.Social/Sharing |

A cool painting, Jeff. Love the layering of all of the textures and images.
