DescriptionOriginal hand-drawn (penciled and inked) art for a classic 1930's Golden Age Smilin' Jack by Zack Mosley, for the January 13, 1939 (1/13/39) daily strip. This is from the classic "Death Rock" storyline, which is one of the most classic and best remembered stories in the history of this legendary newspaper strip. It features Jack and his pal Fat Stuff, in one of his earliest appearances, with Fat Stuff appearing in all 4 panels! It also features the evil-looking Head and Claw, and the character Slab, who meets his end eating poison, after ignoring Fat Stuff's warning. This episode is therefore of course titled "Unheeded Warning", which is written in blue pencil at the top. The full page is large, measuring approximately 21 3/4" by 7" (which I believe is about standard size for most newspaper strip orig art). This is a great piece of original artwork from the long-running series that lasted approximately 40 years from 1933 (when it began originally as "On The Wing") through 1973. As one of the foremost aviation-based American adventure comic strips, nice examples of Smilin Jack are always desirable and sought after. A life-long flying enthusiast, Mosley always put his knowledge of aeronautics into the strip, and kept things accurate and current. The artwork is in good overall shape, with some whiteout and staining in the margins, and it looks like Mosley made some scratch marks in a few places, mostly in the second panel. The piece still has the original 1939 Chicago Tribune - N.Y. News Syndicate Inc. copyright piece attached in the second panel. The piece has been signed by Zack Mosley in the last panel.Social/Sharing |
