Nice! I remember seeing bunches of these in his portfolio at HeroesCon. I miss Bernie. He was a super nice guy. I think he really loved talking to his fans.

I chatted with him for nearly an hour. His name placard wasn’t up, and I guess people didn’t recognize him, so it was largely an undisturbed conversation, too. He poured through the prelims with me, and chose that one for me to buy. Great guy who had no problem hanging with his fans.

Yup, that's a nice situation to luck into. Fantastic guy. Got to meet him three different times at HeroesCon. He remembered me the last time i saw him there, and asked for more food recomendations in Charlotte. Every time I met him he was a regular guy at heart.

Great prep page by the master of the macabre!  Love the storytelling, poses, staging, and the sure-haded pencil lines.  I really enjoyed talking with Wrightson at SDCC in the 90s; as you both mentioned, he was super with fans.  He clearly appreciated, and was actually surprised I'd say, by the intense positive response to his work.  Already by the late 90sis, his wife would massage his inking hand between bouts of his signing books, prints, and originals for collectors.  He blew his hand out after decasdes of inking, but he was still producing a lot of pencil work in those days and well after.  Meeting him was a rare treat.

This is such a beautiful prelim, J H...  As often (and, admittedly, deservedly) as big, splashy pieces grab the headlines, I personally am drawn to storytelling pages and love to see the elements of the artist / storyteller at work in this most unique art form we're all, er... drawn to.  You'd never otherwise see the gothic, dark nature / tone of the SEQUENCE, nor of the influences that might inform the artist's decisions.  He just lays it out, step by step, and I love the fact that he may have so enjoyed drawing this visual creation of his that he couldn't stand to just rough out panel 5; that's a VERY lovely (and pretty finished) rendering of Swampy there.  And panel 6?!!?  Are you kidding me?  That's a full watercolor painting right there (really reminiscent of Frazetta, to my eyes), in beautiful pencil.  This is a stunning sequence, and the fact that Bernie picked it for you is SO great.  He's got good taste. ;)

100%. For me, the sequence and story are key, since that was what drew me into comics. My OA collecting style definitely flows from my early comic collecting style. And that finished Swampy is what we both decided made this The One. If you look at the final page, and compare the two, he must've lightboxed it, because other than the fine details, he kept everything mostly the same shape, space, form, and even line-wise. The middle panel is the only one that was really sketchy. Agreed, he had very good taste. :) Thank you, Jason!

Absolutely stunning Swamp Thing prelim by Bernie Wrightson! I always love seeing these prelims and comparing them to the final published page. On this page, it's amazing how close the sketch is to the finished piece. The scenes are all pretty much the waty he inked them. That fifth panel is practically identical to the published panel. And that sixth panel--That's as good or better than the inked one! Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I'm so envious that you had a chance to talk with Bernie about it. That must have fantastic!

As soon as we started talking, I could tell he was nice enough to ask him to pick through the art with me. He took me through a whole stack, picked out a few, and then we discussed the pros of each. (No way in hell would I mention a con in that situation!). A lovely and amazing guy. Thanks, Bill!
