Description
This is the first time I've ever sketched Adam Warlock and was surprised to get the commission. But of course there were no Infinity Sketch covers available, so by chance I found a Guardians 3000 cover. Since Adam was teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., I thought why the hell not? This was my chance to flex my Jim Lee-inspired figure construction and sketch an elaborate figure in space, heavy on the shadows. The pose had to convey a sense of both power and struggle; the Infinity Gauntlet is the most powerful glove in existence so I wanted Adam to feel the power of those gems. I left the gauntlet baggy as it was in the story; it was designed for Thanos's hand, which is Hulk-sized when you think about it. The costume worked perfectly in that regard. Admittedly I departed somewhat from the Ron Lim design for Adam during Infinity Gauntlet; what he did for that suit is what Ethan Van Sciver does for Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern. The absence of light on a body may work for the GL Corps but this is material and has to show depth and proportion. Otherwise what I'd have is a flat image. The cape is definitely Jim Lee influenced; I love how his illustrations of fabric blowing in the wind seems so kinetic. For the space background, I employed a combination of black, red-violet, violet, and blue-violet Copic tones to create this beautiful galactic setting. The asteroid field was something thrown in at the last minute of conceptualization. I needed to push forth the notions of depth and dimension. The end result has to be one of my best covers to date and one I'm proud of.
