DescriptionI've had two new All-Star Squadron commissions in my inbox overnight, so here's the first, based as ever on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this instance What If? #1 (cover posted in the comments for comparison). Art for this is by Brendon and Brian Fraim. As always, the Fraims exceeded my expectations on this one!In issue #93, Uncle Sam was caught on film by 'Sees-All/Tells-All News' apparently committing acts of sabotage - and the All-Stars were sent to bring him in! Then, in issue #94, despite Black Condor, the Ray, Doll Man, Phantom Lady and the Human Bomb standing with him, Uncle Sam was arrested and sentenced to trial for treason! (No, you haven't missed these - they're still on my 'to be commissioned' list.) This issue - while some of the All-Stars seek desperately to prove Sam's innocence with his trial looming, the War Department becomes concerned at the propaganda implications and, at FDR's instruction, FBI agent Plastic Man forms and leads a new team of Freedom Fighters. Former JSA member - and one of Uncle Sam's original Freedom Fighters - Hourman is joined on the team by the patriotic heroine USA, The Spirit Of Old Glory; the flame-wielding heroine Wildfire (who had retired her heroic identity but is persuaded back into action); and Chuck Lane, the heroic Jester! I've been wanting to use some of the more obscure Quality Comics characters, and this seemed like the opportunity to give a few of them their moment to shine... Deep background - when I first started thinking about doing new All-Star Squadron covers, I knew I wanted to base them all on the covers of Roy's other comics, but I was originally going to restart the series at #1, and this - using Plas, Liberty Belle, Robotman, Johnny Quick (in the Torch's slot) and Tarantula as the featured characters - was going to be the cover of the first issue. But once I realised that the FF / Freedom Fighters comparison was too good to miss, I changed that, and for a while the team would have been Plas, Hourman, Miss America, and *both* Firebrands (Rod Reilly in Spidey's place). ... but I think this final version is even better (and I hope you agree)! Very interesting choice of characters, enjoying the march to #100.
