Spider-Man #10 variant COVER by Pasqual Ferry (ft Miles Morales)

Decided to keep the recent string of Spidey related posts going with this cover beaut by Pasqual Ferry! I liked this one a lot when it was first posted on artcoholics.net but alas was too slow to buy – lucky for moi it was posted on CAF and even luckier the prior owner, J C, after some time, was willing to sell (thanks, man)! Came with a prelim, too (see additional image), which is always a nice bonus, seeing the progression of the final piece.

This is my first Ferry piece – I’ve wanted one but it needed to be the right one. This is also my first published piece featuring Miles Morales! Similarly, I’ve wanted a piece featuring him but it needed to fit the bill. 2 birds killed! And wasn’t Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse just an awesome film?!

OK, on to the art. First, it’s just a fun image with an upside down Miles working on his web shooters in the confines of his room. This was one of 5 variants Marvel did, each promoting a letter in the acronym STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math), an educational concept/approach. This was the Tech one. Second, I liked that his mask was off. The costume, like Spider-Man’s, is great but at times I like the unmasked or half masked Spider Sense head shot so I can see the artists’ take on the character’s actual face. Lastly, it’s refined in its simplicity. Ferry’s recent pieces have little to no rendering, and IMO some can look a bit unfinished, but others, like this one, are great looking examples of the “less is more” adage. The meticulous linework is highlighted as there are less lines altogether!
