Description

Byrne's "painted" covers for Charlton were amazing! I find it such a loss they didn’t continue on to Marvel, or even reemerge at some later date. I'm a big fan of the painted covers he did for Doomsday +1, Space: 1999, and even the Many Ghosts of Doctor Graves. They all looked so cool to me, and I couldn’t be happier to add the unpublished cover he did for the originally unprinted Doomsday +1 #7. Byrne's story "There Will Be Time" did see print in The Charlton Bullseye #4-5, and was later pasted back together as The Doomsday Squad #7 with new coloring.

Also, with all the reprinting on the original run of Doomsday +1, I find it crazy Charlton didn't print Byrne's completed issue #7 with this excellent cover of Jill Malden facing down a rampaging T-Rex. A friend, also without photoshop, made me a quick & dirty mock up of what he thought this cover might have looked like in July of ’75 had it made it to the stands, thanks!

Cool rare gem you unearthed... who know there was an unpublished Byrne Doomsday +1 cover!?! Joe, your Byrne collection is impressive... I like to click through and see all of that artistic growth from page to page.

This is very cool. I knew there was that unpublished Doomsday + 1 story by Joe Gill & John Byrne that eventually saw print in Charlton Bullseye, and then in Fantagraphics' reprint series The Doomsday Squad. But I didn't realize that Byrne had also done a cover for that issue. I agree that it's a shame it never saw print. It's a really nice example of Byrne's early artwork.
