Description

For the uninitiated, let me introduce The Flaming Carrot - Bob Burden’s splendidly surreal and ludicrously costumed crime-fighter. I first saw him in the back pages of Dave Sim’s ‘Cerebus’ comic. I loved him immediately - he had me at ‘UT!’. Defying conventional categorisation, there was literally nothing else like him. Despite a lack of super powers he defended the citizens of Iron City from evil alien swingers, communists, the Man in the Moon, and all manner of bizarre and ridiculous villiany, often giving pursuit astride his nuclear-powered pogo stick, or scaling walls with sink plungers. And seemingly, he was irresistible to women. Impossible to explain, better to experience - I urge you to look him up.

And so, to the artwork. I picked this up on Ebay, just assuming it to be the size of a standard comic (seller didn’t list the dimensions). But when it arrived, turns out it’s a bit bigger than I imagined - a whopping 14.5” x 22.5”! (That’s basically the same size as those Jack ‘King’ Kirby early pages). MASSIVE!
What was it for? Was it a commission? Did it ever see print? Idle speculation on my part but I can imagine it hanging in a comic shop somewhere, deterring the more light-fingered clientelle.
Anyone recognise it, or know it's origins? Or better yet, anyone in touch with Bob, and could ask him? I’d love to know.
