"A Place" by Helice Wen

I say it time and time again but it’s absolutely true. When I find an artist I love it never fails that I end up with a number of pieces by them in my collection. That’s the case with Helice Wen. I purchased my first piece “White Out” from her back in 2014 and “A Place” is my third. Knowing me it most likely won’t be my last either.
Helice painted “A Place” for the Muse group show at SHOH Gallery in June. I loved the piece when I first saw it and when it ended up being returned to her she listed it in her shop. After seeing it there I simply couldn’t get it out of my head for the next few days so I decided to contact her to see if time payments were available. Since I had already purchased a few pieces from her she kindly agreed and I am now the happy owner of this amazing piece. Surprisingly I sent the final payment the day before Helice left for Europe just like when I purchased “White Out” so I had to wait a little while to recieve it but Helice’s work is always worth the wait.

I simply love the piece. Helice said she is experimenting with combining traditional figures and graphic elements in her newer style and you definitely see that in this piece. Starting with timeless reclining nude and adding a fantastic contemporary twist. It doesn’t get much better. The surreal element of the flowers on the pillowcase melting into the bedspread is wonderful. One of my favorite parts is the Woody doll. I mean who doesn’t love Toy Story? The color palette is beautiful. The pastels on the bedspread give the piece a soft tone contrasting the dark blue background. Of course what really makes the piece is the lovely lady reclining with book in hand. The expression on her face just draws you in and leads you to explore the details around her. The whole composition is simply perfect and leads your gaze as you take it all in. Another amazing piece by this phenomenal artist that I am thrilled to be able to enjoy in my collection.
