DescriptionA near full splash (95%?) of the Swarm by Angel Medina! This comes from the Feral arc, one of Angel’s last major contribution to the Marvel universe sadly (which is something that remains a mystery to me to this day-why isn’t such a talented artist, well suited to the majority of nowadays styles and tastes not actively working in comics?). While Feral was not the best written Spidey arc ever (to put it mildly), it really played to the artist’s strengths and offered him the chance to draw many monstrous characters in the Marvel/Spidey mythos. Case in point, the SWARM! I always like the character since his introduction in Champions and I don’t think that there has been a better published example of him this side of the introductory page drawn by John Byrne. This must have been the concurrence’s thought as well as I had to fight a bit to get this one, much more than I would have initially foreseen. About the art. He is creepy as hell here, hovering above his prey. Angel even managed to throw in some loose bees that also looks monstrous and add to the tension/sense of dread of the scene. What I really find impressive is the sense of flying/floating we get from the page. By many artists’ admission, making it work on the page is not easy to pull off even in an industry where we get so many flying characters. This is superbly achieved here. You will also find some great Angel Medina tidbits such as the unending floating cape (probably a stylistic remnant of his Spawn days) and the ultra-close up on the eye in panel one which he has already used several times in his career. Mention on the rich black inks by Hanna. Social/Sharing |

Great page from an arc where IMO Angel showed off some of his best stuff. Really like the perspective choice here, adds to the scary factor of what it is a pretty creepily designed character, in a good way! Congrats, man!
