DescriptionMore than 30 (!) years ago, the Hobbit graphic novel was my gateway into comics. The lushly painted and beautiful artwork by David Thorn Wenzel captured my imagination. To date, David is the only artist ever authorized by the Tolkien estate to do a comics adaptation of the Hobbit.Last year, I was lucky enough to be able to buy the original art page featuring the Death of Smaug. I first met David and his lovely wife, Jan, at Terrificon in 2018. At that time, David told me he had loved working on the Hobbit so much, he wanted to illustrate the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, which he estimated would take him 10 years or so to paint. Unfortunately, the license fell through and the world never got to see an illustrated graphic novel version of the Lord of the Rings. After meeting David in 2018 and hearing this story, my imagination was triggered and I really wanted to know what his Lord of the Rings paintings would look like. So I approached him before Terrificon last year. David has a busy schedule and he warned me ahead of time that it would take some time to do the two paintings I had envisioned. I chose what I think are the two pivotal moments in the trilogy, both from Return of the King. Here is the scene where Gollum has bitten off Frodo's finger and finally has the ring, moments before he tumbles to his death in Mt. Doom, all while Sam looks on in horror. The two paintings were drawn in pencil and then colored with watercolors. They are each 12 x 18 inches. Social/Sharing |

Thank you, Ryan! It's a real shame the publishing deal never worked out so that David could do his take on Lord of the Rings. As we can see from this piece, it would have been something remarkable!
