DescriptionIllustration by Ron Miller depicting a fleet of Ernst Stuhlinger-designed spacecraft approaching Mars, created for the February/March 2000 issue of Air & Space magazine. Ron supplied this text:Ernst Stuhlinger was an avid proponent of electrically propelled spacecraft. His best-known design is probably the ion-powered Mars armada featured in Disney's "Mars and Beyond." Stuhlinger's ion drive used little propellant and because ion thrusters produce little acceleration, escaping Earth can take months. Once away from Earth, however, ion-powered spacecraft can eventually reach higher speeds than chemical- or nuclear-powered vessels. Each ship's flat body was a radiator, cooling the working fluid that had been heated by a nuclear reactor. This fluid then drove a turbine to generate electricity for ionizing and accelerating the cesium propellant. The landing on Mars would be accomplished by separate landing craft. Social/Sharing |
