Karate Kid vs. Aquaman by Mike Becker

Mike Becker is another artist who I discovered�thanks to social media. He was always posting cool art and so I started following his work. He runs an online comic called Empyrex Adventures that is definitely worth following, and also be sure to look up some of his Legion of Super-Heroes redesigns that he posted a couple years ago. Anywho, Mike and I have been talking about him doing a commission for me for a while, and this year it finally happened. Mike had suggested Aquaman as an opponent for Karate Kid, and I was all for it. When this commission popped up in my inbox, I was instantly amazed. First off, I love that the fight is set underwater and that we have some anemone-type thing reaching up to grab Arthur and Val. The bubbles and swirls are excellent, too. And the way Val's clothes are moving underwater (look at the way his collar's bending) makes this commission unique. I also really dig the way Aquaman blocked Val's kick with his trident. Mike colored this one himself, and did an incredible job. The tones and the lighting add a lot to the mood of this battle. Anyway, big thanks to Mike for this excellent commission!

I almost always pick Val Armorr to win these fights, and maybe I'm a LITTLE biased. But I'll admit that Val is going to have some serious trouble here unless he can move the fight out of the water. Sure, he can survive down there as long as he has his Legion Flight Ring, but that water's going to slow his movements, and Aquaman will be moving faster down there. Also, Aquaman can call on sea creatures for assistance. Maybe Val knows some underwater fighting technique? It's possible, for sure, but I still think he's in trouble unless he can take this fight out onto land or even in the air.
