Description

For the final days of this crazy month of April 2020, I'm sharing some of my coolest April artwork.

Sketch card of April O'Neil as a cat mutant, based on Michael Dooney's own concept sketches for a 1990 Playmates Toys action figure which made it to the mold stage but never produced for the line.

Dooney published a few of his early Cat Mutant April sketches in a 1991 Tundra Sketchbook but simply captioned the drawings a "a cat mutant," without reference to the action figure pitches. Some of his sketches along with a photograph of the wax sculpt can be seen in Blake Wright's "Toys That Time Forgot: A Visual History of Unproduced Action Figures, Volume Two" (2019). And look for additional information on this and other TMNT prototypes in Chris Fawcett's book "Rad Plastic: The Totally Awesome History of the Original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Toys" (2021).
