Description

Although George McManus' masterpiece, Bringing Up Father, began in 1913 as a daily strip, there were no Sunday BUF pages until April 14, 1918. This is the 6th Bringing Up Father Sunday page and the earliest Sunday page of the strip that I know to exist.

As in all the early Sunday pages, McManus has colored each outfit of clothing and all the furniture the first time those items appear in the strip. This was done so that the engravers could use the colors chosen by the artist in preparing the newspaper printing plates. In this instance, there are so many costume variations and scene changes that the page is almost fully colored, which is very unsual.

This strip was reprinted in color in theThe Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics (Abrams, 1977, at page 100), and the topper (with Maggie's utensils flying through the air toward an unsuspecting Jiggs) was used as an illustration on the cover of that book.
