Description

This Krazy Kat original was offered in one of Russ Cochran's Graphic Gallery catalogues, many years before I began to collect comic strip art. My friend, Howard Lowery, had made me aware of it, since it had always been one of his favorite Herriman pieces. When it turned up in an Illustration House auction in May 1997, I bought it along with the earlier of my two 1924 Barney Google Sunday pages. That was a very good day!

This Sunday was used as the first frontispiece of The Comic Art of George Herriman, the 1986 book by Patrick McDonnell, et al.

By the way, the Google, which is much rarer than almost any Herriman, sold for $1,000 (14.28%) more than what this page sold for in the 1997 auction. My other DeBeck Sunday from 1924 cost me virtually double what I paid for this.
