Description[I remember ten years ago there was a Dutch Superman graphic album done by Teddy Kristiansen, which was really pretty, it was very nice. If anything, it kind of looked like the stuff that Tim Sale does. At the time – and I think to this day – it was only published in Holland, because DC looked at it and said, “This doesn’t look like a DC comic. We will not publish this.” I remember thinking, “Wow, that’s kind of shortsighted."]- Bruce Timm (Modern masters volume 3, page 81) In 1988, DC marked Superman's 50th anniversary by encouraging foreign publishers to create their original stories with the Man of Steel. However, only one publisher, Denmark's Interpresse, took the plunge. The chosen team comprised Niels Søndergaard as the writer and Teddy Kristiansen as the artist, marking the beginning of Kristiansen's career in comic book art. The narrative follows Theodore Wyatt, an American journalist and peace activist, who possesses classified intel that could alter the course of the Cold War. Traveling through five European cities (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Amsterdam and Helsinki) he seeks support from nations opposed to the nuclear arms race. Simultaneously, he becomes a target for spy agencies like the CIA and KGB, prompting Superman to act as Wyatt's personal bodyguard. The story, while sharing some thematic elements with The Dark Knight Returns, takes a different tone. Instead of grim and gritty, it's lighthearted and fun. Superman operates independently, defying his government, in contrast to the more common narrative of him being an asset. This page captures a moment in Copenhagen, as Superman returns to the hotel where Lois Lane and Theodore Wyatt are staying, moments after a dramatic ambush. Social/Sharing |
