Description

“The Night Shift” (Among Us Mortals, 10/17/1954)
by W.E. (William Ely) Hill (1887-1962)
18.5 x 15 in., ink on board

W.E. (William Ely) Hill (1887-1962) was known for his masterful black and white Sunday page, “Among Us Mortals,” sometimes referred to as the Hill Page. Please see the Gallery description for more about Hill.

From this October 17, 1954 edition, titled “The Night Shift” some quotes:

“The 11 P. M. dog walkers, led by a yawner who didn’t want to come out, but the wife made him, because Margot needed the exercise.”

“Scrublady tidying up the office during the night hours. She’s telling another scrublady how much she enjoyed lovable James Stewart in ‘Rear Window.’”

I loved working the night shifts at the hospital, a hushed world or if you go into Walmart at 3am, a slightly crazy world. I love these pages and their insights into social mores and human behaviour

As of 31 May 2020, this posting exhausts my supply of Hill pages. My examples all date from between 1942-1954. At one per week, that's 676 installments that exist(ed), of which I have 48 of them. It's a shame that there does not seem to be a broader appreciation for this interesting and well-crafted work. Hill had a real eye for observation and commentary.

Sorry to see them end, one of the nice things about the series is that it sparked memories of folks whose paths intersected with mine , some of them I had not thought about for years but these brought them back to the surface.
