Description

Will Crawford began his career at the Newark Call (in Newark, NJ) in the 1880s and I believe this piece that I recently acquired is from around that period. The perpetual calendar tells me that this month and day occurred in 1883, 1894, 1900 and 1906, so the range of dates fits.

The Sketch Club was located at the address on this piece in Newark, New Jersey. Crawford grew up in Irvington, New Jersey, a stone's throw from Newark. While the artwork isn't a fully mature Crawford style, you can see hints of what would come. I am smitten with the mixture of Crawford's lettering on the piece and love, love, love that little blackbird. Early uncommon work by a great illustrator.
