Description

Moody moonlight opening scene for the classic tale with a subtle supernatural twist, "Paint A Picture of Peril!" by seasoned Bat-scribe Denny O'Neil. Page one original artwork for Detective Comics #397 (DC/ March, 1970) by the living legend himself, Neal Adams (pencils and inks). Per Neal himself, this first page was inked by him and not Dick Giordano, who assisted with inks on the rest of the story. Adams is at his apex here, depicting a clandestine team of frogmen emerging from Gotham Bay to steal a painting from Bruce Wayne's art exhibit. The ever so silent movement of the invading team of scuba divers as they slowly rise from the murky depths, with the water falling delicately off their emerging forms is a testament to Adams' brilliance as a draftsman and visionary as well as his sublime inking skills, which are second to none. The deep twilight atmospheric aura of this scene is heavy with ghostly mood, which brilliantly sets the stage for the fierce confrontation that soon unfolds, as the dread Batman swoops down upon the terrified diver in the bottom panel.

No one does it better than Neal Adams!
