DescriptionApparently it was national Spider-Man Day yesterday – found out late but I love me some Spidey so posting some today in celebration!Recent pick-up here from fellow CAFer Mike McGinley. My first piece featuring Pete in the Iron Spider costume, and from the first arc it appeared in in the ASM Civil War tie-in, AND subsequently from the first artist to draw the costume in print in Ron Garney! Nice lilf trifecta there :) Main draw for the pick-up was that big first splashy panel – I definitely wanted an Iron Spider piece that had a full image of the costume displayed and that panel definitely qualified. Love how the lenses stick out with this look. Also got some nice storytelling with Registration Act supporters shown at the top right, followed by opponents one panel down, then some shots of Spidey thinking how, even though hefs done the grighth thing by being on the side of the Registration along with Iron Mancsomething doesnft feel right (check out the captions in the additional published image). Thatfs the last thing I liked about the piece. Anyone whofs read Civil War knows that though Spidey starts pro Registration he ends up flipping to Capfs side/the opposition, and this is where we first see Pete having those doubts. Got a Wolverine and Hulk piece already by Garney so Ifm glad to now add some Spidey! I think Ifm pretty set with Garney. I say that now :) Thanks, Mike, and I hope everyone had a nice Spidey Day! Very cool page. That first panel rocks, but I also like the reflections in Spidey's eyes. Congrats

Clearly the first panel image is the money shot, and a great one at that. But I really like the two extreme closeups of Spidey's mask/eye panels as well, and even the panel image shot from behind as Spidey rides atop the vehicle is neat. By the way, if I didn't know better, I'd have guessed those are Bagley background people in the 2 upper panels!

You're right those close up mask/eye panels provide some effective storytelling, especially with that lens sheen and the reflections of the Bagley peeps :) Thanks, Ruben, and all, for the comments!

A fantastic page in so many ways. You get the great images of the new suit, you have someone shouting Peter's no-longer secret identity name out loud (unfortunately it's to say he "sucks" - poor Pete gets no love even when he's finally on the side of the law) and then you get the doubts creeping in about the side he has chosen. Well done!

Appreciate that, J! Yup, having the scene be particularly meaningful as far as the story arc goes along with it purely being a nice piece of OA to look at is ALWAYS nice :)

Thanks, A! Good callout on the figure work. His fluid and at times less rendered figure work can seem "simpler" but it's all but. No wasted lines and he often makes the difficult look easy. Reinhold inks accentuate here. Thanks, again!

Super example from a key moment of not only Spidey (lots of grist for the ol' story mill sprung from this era, as well as a costume desgin that still pops up in various forms today), but industry-wide crossovers, as well... Civil War was a game-changer in so many ways, and despite how anyone may about them, crossovers like this were now here to stay.
Personally, I remember being really impressed and carried away by the story at the time because of the "meaningful" / "significant" events that happened outside of the main Civil War book, and both Spidey and FF (both written by JMS) were all-in on the procceedings.
Garney's "simple" style is (just as you say) no frills, excellent storytelling. It gives your eye all the detail it needs to convey what's going on and whooshes the viewer along with the story. His style reminds me of Romita, Jr. at times in just how cut to the bone it is, and how it facilitates breakneck story pacing.
Awesome page, man! Congrats!

Thanks for the great comments, as always, Jason! Great point regarding the "significant" events happening outside of the main Civil War series...I don't think you can say that for most other events. Other times the tie-in arcs feel forced but Civil War impacted those tie-in books in legit ways. A chief example was here in ASM and the story was told superbly by JMS and Garney - as you say, good at cutting to the bone! Definitely glad to have gotten a page!
