Description

�� Mick Gray is best known as an inker for Patrick Gleason on Superman, J. H. Williams on Promethea, and Ryan Sook for various projects. I first met him at a store signing at Treasure Island Comics in Fremont, CA and we both attended an art collectors' dinner in San Jose. Mick and I catch up at local conventions such as Steve Wyatt's South City Comic Con. We are Facebook friends and Mick offered up these five Wonder Woman sketch covers. After claiming one of the Bruce Timm tributes, I inquired whether Mick was willing to take a commission request and this is the result. Porco Rosso is a favorite of mine with the story of Great War Italian ace Marco. Some unexplained brew of survivor's guilt and war weariness has turned Marco into a pig. During the Great Depression, he survives as a seaplane pilot battling airborne pirates over the Adriatic Sea. In the latter part of the movie, Marco returns with his rebuilt Savoia S.21 and the girl engineer Fio, granddaughter of his old friend Piccolo. Mick has captured their attitude as they confront the pirates on Marco's island base. I love the inclusion of the seaplane which reminds me of Mick's background as a commercial illustrator before taking up comics. Mick is working on an exciting graphic novel project.
