Kitty Pryde and Lockheed

This is a recent commission I've completed as of a few hours ago. Before I got this commission I'd never tried to draw Kitty Pryde or Lockheed so this was a learning curve. I wanted to tap into Kitty's ninja training from Wolverine, which cemented the bond between them. Further, I wanted to do so in a way that would incorporate her mutant ability to phase through solid objects. So what better way than her walking into a room through the wall with a katana? I pulled some lessons learned from a Japanese-themed Wolverine sketch I tackled a few years ago into this piece and researched traditional Japanese rooms. This is also the darkest in flesh tones I've approached given it was a sunset. Regarding her phasing, I wanted to show a slight shimmer at the areas of her skin and hair that were passing through the surface, so I incorporated a subtle amount of white prismacolor. Usually you see Kitty just appear like a ghost, but I felt I wanted to be more ethereal with her power. Etched on 9 x 12", all in all, I'm extremely proud of this piece. It allowed me to experiment with color in a way I never had before. It allowed me to judge light and shadow in different ways. I'm especially proud of the kimono and Lockheed's flapping wings. In short, nailed it.
