Description

Detective Comics (Vol. 1) #1010 original cover art for "The Brave and the Old" (October 2019). Deadshot triumphantly stands over Batman laying on his back draped over a gargoyle statue as bats surround in the air. This issue was part of the "Year of the Villain" event that saw villains taking the upper hand throughout the DC Universe. Jae Lee both penciled and inked this cover, and his distinct style is very recognizable. I have always loved how I can't always tell what the image truly is at first glance but have to dive in to really see it for what it is. Nice use of contrast and superb attention to detail.

As an interesting trivia tidbit, this was not the original solicited cover for 1010. The original solicit was for a Philip Tan cover (which I also happen to own the original art for). The cover was changed last minute, and even Philip wasn't aware of it until the issue came out. Sadly, his cover is still yet to be used, and I personally think it is one of the best that Philip has ever done. I will list that cover at some point in my gallery. My guess is that, due to the Deadshot story, DC preferred having a cover with Deadshot on it rather than the solo Batman cover Tan did. Guess we will never know.

Done in pencils and inks on 11" X 17" art board, though the actual image is a good bit smaller .
