Description

This "very special" issue of New Mutants tackled the topic of child abuse, as the kids discover that one of their dance classmates has a dark secret. In this sequence, dance teacher Steve Hunter has just received another creepy "heavy breathing" phone call. She and Xi'an move from Stevie's apartment to the adjacent dance studio, greeting another student who has arrived early. The first two years of New Mutants showed them interacting several times with teens from nearby Salem Center, but that element faded in favor of horror and superhero tales.

This page was assembled from three different pieces for its final form; the seams and taping are seen on the back side image, as is a blue pencil version of Stevie's telephone. The first panel's word balloon is detached but accompanies the art in a ziploc bag. Other word balloons are only partially attached. Two in the upper right corner are differently faded and have been attached with tape.

Any page from this early part of the series is a gem in my book. This is from the well remembered "Who's Scaring Stevie?" story. I love the McLeod finishes over Sal B's pencils!

A great, quiet Buscema page with strong inks by McLeod (in fact it almot looks like a full McLeod page).
