DescriptionMy first Double Page Splash – and an amazing one at that! To my surprise, when I opened my published copy, this was also the Title Page of the comic. Absolutely in love with this masterpiece by Manuel Garcia (Black Widow, Iron Man Noir, Dark Avengers: Ares). This moment is also featured on the cover of issue one, as well as on the cover of issue 2 by Mike Deodato Jr. One of two reasons why I got this, was that this is a super fun “Where is Waldo?” kind of page for Marvel villains. The second reason is that it features one of the key Avengers moments in my personal reading history. The early New Avengers era by Bendis & Finch is among my favorite reads on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, probably because that is when I jumped on with the newer comics in 2005 (and I think it is just that good). This double page splash (and the miniseries) recount that first New Avengers arc – “Breakout” – from the perspective of Peter Parker. The coolest moment for me was when Spidey got jumped by 30-40 C-listers and David Finch masterfully showing that even “great power” has its limits. In the New Avengers comic, the moment was told in a regular page (not even a splash), so I think Manuel improved on the impact of that moment – and the breaking of Peter’s arm. It just holds more weight and a bit more punch, in my opinion. As always, each page is 11x17 (or 22x17 combined) and is done on official Marvel art board in traditional pencils and inks. Technically, I love the panel storytelling. From the lights going out at the Raft in the middle of New York City to the explosion, urging the reader to immediately look at the consequence for Spidey who’s at the prison break. Great, light inks, too. I’ve uploaded a scan of the published pages, too. WHO'S WHO: One of the Brothers Grimm (Left with the skull mask) & above him Shockwave (with the full facial visor). Armadillo (right above Peter) with one of the Blood Brothers behind him. Bottom left, we have who I believe is to be Molecule Man due to the facial markings. More in the middle, we have Jigsaw grabbing Peter Parker, the Slug (slimmed down, in the middle with glasses), Vermin (behind the Slug), Scarecrow (between Jigsaw & the Slug) & the Griffin (with the wings behind Jigsaw’s back). Above Griffin, you can see the Grey Gargoyle’s face and the Corruptor right above him. The female near them is Typhoid Mary. Underneath Griffin, you can spot an unmasked Rampage with the Controller (with the helmet) next to him; Top right, we have the four members of the Hulk villains, the U-Foes: Vector, Vapor, X-Ray & Ironclad. Bottom right, we have Mandrill, only nearly making the shot. Not found yet, but presumably here are Crossfire, Mr Fear, Stilt-Man (Wilbur Day) and Crossbones (Brock Rumlow). Social/Sharing |
