DescriptionI'm wrapping up my Skottie Young posts for the week with two pieces of original art from the delightful 2009 Wonderful Wizard of Oz miniseries. In this fun page from issue #1, Dorothy gets acquainted with the Scarecrow after meeting him just four pages earlier. I absolutely love that last panel, and check out the beautiful sunset colors that they used on the published page (additional pic). I bought and read the TPB for this series a while back, and they couldn't have picked a better artist than Skottie Young to illustrate it. Social/Sharing |

One thing about Skottie's somewhat sparse style, is that it is always very open for color. It's clear that the coloring was intended to be a big selling point for this series. Such a sweet, innocent looking scene here, as the characters appear far younger than in the film.

Definitely some nice storytelling throughout and I'd have to agree regarding that last panel! Congrats, Paul - nice way to wrap up Skottie week!

Beautiful! Great design and page layout here, too - densely packed three-panel top tier, two-panel second tier starting to open things up, and single panel bottom tier as Dorothy, Toto, and the Scarecrow hit the bricks and ease on down the road. In typical Skottie style, the art in that awesome last panel is pretty exuberant, but when combined with the intense coloring and the text ("No, it's a lighted match."), you can't help but get chills from the foreshadowing... Another outstanding example, Paul! Congrats!

That's a great point about how the "lighted match" comment and the intense (fire-like) sunset colors could be connected in that foreshadowing way. Well done!! I also like the "ease on down the road" reference. I love 'The Wiz.' Thanks for another super nice comment.
