Description

Collecting Blondie, cont.

The Murray Harris collection included a Blondie from later in 1933, after the marriage of Blondie and Dagwood, which I bought out of Howard Lowery's first auction of Harris strips in 1991. I also bought the May 16, 1933 daily from Albert Moy at the San Diego con in 1991. But I still wasn't finding more examples of hunger strike strips.

The next significant opportunity to buy Blondies ghosted by Raymond came when Guernsey's auctions had an auction in February 1993 with many Blondies from the early 1930s, almost none of which were illustrated in the catalogue for the sale. The one exception was the strip for August 26, 1931, which I really liked. But I thought that the estimate for the daily was out of line for what I had paid for Blondies, and I figured that it wouldn't sell. As is usually the case when I think that no one will pay a high price for comic art, someone did buy the strip, despite the price. Similarly, I had struck out, without even coming up to bat, in connection with the only Blondie included in the first of Sotheby's comic book and comic art auctions in 1991. This time it was for the first hunger strike daily that I had seen in several years, the strip for 17 Jan 1933 [one of the best of the 28 hunger strikes]. The estimate on that strip was around five times what I had paid for any Blondie up until then, and I was just sure it would fail to sell, making it possible for me to pick it up for less at some later date. But, even though I thought that no one other than myself was collecting Blondies, as such, it also managed to find a buyer.

The pieces of the picture started to fall into place with my next THREE failures.

One Saturday in 1993, I had gone into my office to catch up on some work, but, being such a diligent and focused adult, I took off and went to a small comic book convention in downtown Los Angeles. Apparently I didn't take my cell phone with me, since I didn't learn until it was too late that Scott Dunbier was trying to reach me, both at my home, office, and cell phone numbers. As I was blissfully spending my money on D.C. Super Powers action figures from the late, hard to last release, Scott was at a mini comic art sale at the gallery of Alexander Acevedo in NYC. Someone had walked in with three hunger strikes plus a single-panel Barney Google daily from 1931. Scott didn't know what I would be willing to pay and he could not talk the owner into waiting until he could get an answer from me. so all four strips were sold to a comic art dealer from the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, whose name I don't care to repeat -- even though he apparently has moved on to other collecting/selling areas. When I got back to my office, thinking I really was going to get down to work, I heard Scott's message and lost all desire to do anything at all! I called Scott, but the event was over in NY, but I did learn from him how much the other dealer had paid for the strips. I then called that other dealer, who I had not dealt with before, and left a message asking him to call me when he got back into town, making specific reference to the three Blondies. Continued...
