DescriptionWas not a huge fan of Silvestri's Marvel work, but heck, even I'D buy this for $75
I’ve gotten many wonderful compliments from the fine people of CAF about my collection/gallery. All giving me credit for being smart enough to buy all the pieces I bought way back when. Well, now I’m about to show you all what an absolute idiot I was. Keep in mind that many of the pieces that currently reside in my collection came from these very same catalogs. So the next time you want to call me a genius for all the pieces I did buy back then, just take a look at some of the rubbish I DIDN’T buy! In other words, this is the collection I COULD‘VE had. (Somebody shoot me now! LOL) What is very interesting to note here is that during this 9-year span of catalogs (1984-1993), there is nothing here that is priced over (or anywhere near) $1000. Actually (with the exception of the Killing Joke page), nothing even breaks the $500 range. Absolutely incredible for pieces that could all easily be five figures (or more) today! By the way, I’ve got dozens and dozens of these. So I’ll be posting them in chunks from time to time (to prolong the torture). Social/Sharing |

I love the sharing Eric - really fun to see how much things have changed in 30 years. Heck at these prices I bet kids had some - and I cringe to think of the food stains and "added" colour some originals may have earned!

Haha! I guess that would make more sense today. I have to say, out of all the Image boys, I think Silvestri's prices have surprised me the most. I didn't really like his art any better than Liefeld's at the time, but I know Rob was very popular so I expected his art would be in demand. But Mark's popularity caught me off guard. Of the six, I enjoyed Jim, Dale, and Todd's art. But never really cared for Rob, Marc, or Erik's stuff. That being said, I do think that Marc's work improved the most after he went to Image. The Top Cow "house style" that he, Finch, and Turner were producing was incredible stuff. Not a big fan of the original Image in general, but I would have to say that Top Cow was the imprint I enjoyed most. And Silvestri had a lot to do with that.

Interesting, thanks. Because Silvestri has always been pointed as the better (techincal) artist of all the "Image boys" by all of them. Safe for Jim Lee, strangely ;)

I bought this for 350 in 2002. Traded it for a silvestri xmen cover. And tried to buy it back when it went for auction. I dropped out at 7k. Lol

Interesting. What year was that auction? It only went up from $75 to $350 in 11 years. But just wondering how long it took to jump to 7k?

Interesting. Not sure if this would be an accurate barometer for the time frame, as I'm sure it differs from artist to artist. But it's pretty telling about the market when you see the price jump from 1991 to 2002, and compare that to the price jump from 2002 to 2016. You bought it for about 5 times the original catalog price, and the it auctioned for over 20 times YOUR buying price. Wow!
