DescriptionGene Colan was a master storyteller. Working Marvel Method with Stan Lee allowed Gene tremendous creative freedom to compose and direct his stories according to his own cinematic predilections, but also transferred responsibility for the overall vision of the work to him as artist/composer. Without peer when it came to establishing atmosphere and mood, Colan was also legendary for some of his non-standard choices in rhythmic structure and plot pacing. Captain America #136 is a perfect example of this.Cap #136 opens in high gear with one of the great splash pages of the silver age, or perhaps any age. This stunning art is here on CAF. It's dispiriting enough that I don't own the page... don't make me point to it. Following the nail-biting drama of the splash page, starting on page two Gene whiplashes the reader's (and perhaps Stan's) expectations by jerking the wheel to the left in a hairpin turn and exiting the Autobahn, to meander in a suburban cul-de-sac for a full six pages before returning to the action on page eight. This sudden transition in intensity decelerates the story progress, but that's OK, as the sequence is rendered so beautifully! "Stan Lee would just give me - and any of the other artists that could do it - a brief thumbnail idea of what the plot was - this is the beginning, this is the middle, and that's the end - and I wouldn't come into the city with that, I would tape record him telling me the story over the phone. That way I could follow the message that he left for me, on the recorder, and space it out the way he tells it. And I would say 'well this will take just so many pages and this should take so many' and I would equal it out until I felt that it would - in my mind, I didn't make notes or anything - that it should eat up about 18 pages, and tell the story. And sometimes I would run into trouble and other times I would be right on the nailhead. I just couldn't stand doing thumbnail sketches of these things, I just wanted to get right to it - and I would start with panel one." ~ Gene Colan Social/Sharing |

Pretty and interesting page! Surprising to hear that Colan would forgo thumbnails and just crank it out in finished form starting from panel 1, especially if there were no more than a few sentences from Stan...

Gorgeous page. Colan's pencils with Everett's inks are just a wonder to behold. And you have so many Colan/Everett pages! Great stuff.
