DescriptionMike Kaluta is one of those artists who I really admire, but who hasn't done much work on comics or characters that I collect. Because of that, I don't have much of his art in my collection.Apart from being a great artist, Kaluta is also a really nice guy. I had the privilege of visiting his studio 20 years ago and it was very memorable. Among other things, he was working on a gigantic Shadow commission at the time, which I believe showed up in an auction a few years ago. Due to Mitch's site updates, I only recently became aware that Kaluta drew a few things for Marvel around 2010. One of those projects was the first four pages to Marvel Zombies 5 #3, featuring Sir Percy, the original Black Knight. As an aside, is anyone else surprised that Marvel published 5 (or more) Zombie mini-series? I guess The Walking Dead really did inspire a lot of imitators and Marvel is still following the Martin Goodman model of finding out what's popular and then copying it. Anyway, back when I was a kid, I read a lot of early Marvel comics by picking up the relatively cheap reprint series, Fantasy Masterpieces, which became Marvel Super-Heroes. Some of the issues reprinted the great 1950's Black Knight series with art by Joe Maneely. I became a fan of the character and also had a soft spot for his descendant, Dane Whitman, soon to be portrayed in the movies by Kit Harington. When this full page splash showed up for sale, I jumped on it. I think the character and image definitely suits Kaluta's style. There's a small signature, dated 2010, semi-hidden at the bottom right of the art. Social/Sharing |

The level of detail is astounding. Even the grass and scrub is well done. It adds to the ethereal quality of the scene. Kaluta did a beautiful job with this Black Knight page. Great pick up! Congrats
