DescriptionI remain oddly sentimental about these eight Black Widow tales in Amazing Adventures. This page features Carlos of the Young Warriors, who was rendered by Colan/Everett in the following two issues (and never seen again). I have an earlier page from the same issue that's arguably just as cool... what baneful personality disorder drives me neurotically onward to overpay for additional examples?Natasha's brief solo run took a detour from her role as a super-heroine spy to explore themes of class and social relevancy from a 1970 perspective. This could be dismissed as a plot contrivance, but it did result in Marvel's first spin at a solo heroine having a quirky tone and atmosphere all its own, in spite of editorial indifference and the discontinuity of creative people assigned to the series. The initial story arc (in AA #2-4) featured the Young Warriors, who were modeled on Puerto Rican civil rights organization the Young Lords. The Young Lords created community projects similar to those of the Black Panthers, but centralized around Latinos. The programs included free breakfast for children, pictured on this page, and pivotal to this three issue story. The second story arc in AA #5-7 combined then-current headlines about the Manson Family and the omnipresent astrology fad, to feature a malevolent Faginesque cultish gang leader drawing impoverished youths into lives of crime. It's interesting to consider where the Black Widow series might have gone had it been given a chance to find its rudder and continue past a mere eight issues. Instead, Madame Natasha moved on to co-billing in Daredevil in an attempt to prop up that book’s sales. It was many more years to come before Marvel found a female lead to keep around longer than eight issues. Social/Sharing |

Gorgeous Buscema page with beautiful inks by Verpoorten. That final panel is downright chilling!

Wonderful page, and Verpoorten's bold lines really make the most of the grizzly features JB gave the hoodlums in the last panel. It's great to read the detailed context you provided for this page (and the series).
