X OF SWORDS, PART 21

A game abandoned, but a great gamble remains. A Tower answers.

The last original art interior pages of X of Swords and yet again by the awesome Mahmud Asrar.

For this event, Marvel involved many of its finest talents but turned to three of its very best -- Pepe Larraz, Mahmud Asrar and Phil Noto -- to create not just the most artwork, but probably the most significant.

From the origin story in X-Men #13, to the Swordbearers of Arakko in X of Swords: Stasis, to the tense but touching storytelling scenes in X-Men #14, to the first battle between Genesis and Apocalypse in X-Men #15, to these breathtakingly epic scenes in Excalibur #15, Mahmud’s work on this event has been consistently superb.

In a recent Q & A with his followers on social media, Mahmud was asked which single issue he was most proud of and he said this one. He drew three-quarters of the pages of this book and I was lucky enough to pick them all up. Well, not quite all -- Mahmud liked page 5 so much he decided to keep that one for himself. Fair enough. I’m sure I would have done the same. In any event, I was absolutely delighted when I was told that these pages were available. They are an awesome addition to my X of Swords collection and my Gallery of X!

P.S. If you look carefully, you will see that Death had a brief cameo but only in the original art of this page, digitally replaced by War. Mahmud slipped up on page 5 as well - see Additional Images for page 4.
