Cool one, is it a blue line inked piece?
It was inked from pencils :)
What happens is that Alan starts with a loose pencil prelim on a small piece of paper, which he then prints in blue lines on a regular 11*17 artboard. He then pencils a very finished line which is usually all covered in the inking process. The visible blue line is what remains of the printed thumbnail.
