Description

This is artwork from the exhibition by the Cartoon Museum as a tribute to Bill Watterson, with all proceeds from the artwork going towards the running of the Museum (a most worthy cause). The entire project was kindly and generously endorsed by Bill Watterson himself. Unfortunately, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition was short-lived and ran only from 7 March 2020 to 26 April 2020. It was hoped that the exhibition could reopen but, alas, this was not to be. I have since arranged for the artwork that I bid for successfully to be sent to me. This is one of the pieces - a wonderful work by Brent Anderson (most famous perhaps for his work on the series, Astro City) which is in ink and watercolor on paper. Many thanks to Summerlea and Andrew from the Museum for all their kindness throughout. Indeed, the Museum has just published a catalog of the exhibition. It is splendidly produced and I recommend it highly; it is the next best thing to having visited the exhibition in person.

So that's where it went. A great illo - in the top three of the exhibition - which cleverly acknowledges Watterson's great dinosaurs but also Anderson's classic work on Ka-Zar and Zabu in the distant 80s. Speaking as one of the underbidders (if not the underbidder directly under you - my memory is hazy about auctions from 18 months ago) I am usually quite angry about snipers, but I am now happy that it went to such an articulate collector with refined OA sensibilities.
